Infrapatellar Nerve Entrapment: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment
Overview: Infrapatellar nerve entrapment, also known as anterior knee pain syndrome, is a condition characterised by compression or irritation of the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve. This can lead to persistent pain and discomfort around the front of the knee. Understanding the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options is crucial for managing this condition effectively.
Causes:
· Overuse or Repetitive Stress: Activities involving frequent bending and straightening of the knee.
· Trauma: Direct impact or injury to the knee, leading to nerve compression.
· Structural Issues: Anatomical abnormalities or tightness in surrounding tissues.
· Inflammatory Conditions: Conditions causing inflammation around the knee joint.
Symptoms:
· Persistent Anterior Knee Pain: Dull or sharp pain at the front of the knee.
Tenderness: Increased sensitivity or discomfort upon touch.
Pain Aggravated by Activity: Worsening of symptoms during movements like walking, running, or climbing stairs.
Swelling: In some cases, mild swelling around the knee.
Numbness or Tingling: Sensations of numbness or tingling in the affected area.
Treatment:
Rest and Activity Modification:
Temporary avoidance of activities causing pain.
Modification of movement patterns to reduce stress on the nerve.
Physical Therapy:
- Stretching and strengthening exercises to improve flexibility and muscle support.
- Techniques to address biomechanical issues contributing to nerve entrapment.
Ice Application: Ice therapy to Dr. Tushar's clinic pain and reduce inflammation.
Ultrasound-guided hydrodissection: is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat nerve entrapment by injecting a solution, typically a mixture of local anaesthetic and saline or 5% dextrose, around the affected nerve. The goal is to separate the nerve from surrounding tissues, such as scar tissue or adjacent structures causing compression, thereby relieving symptoms.
